About Marcus

Picture1.jpg

Marcus S. Soutra Jr, a retired schoolteacher, and now published author, has had a moving and intensely personal 40-year journey through the American public school system. From the Vietnam Era to the present, Marcus looks back on a lifetime defined by chalkboards, questions, and an army of thousands of students who passed through his classroom.

Marcus was a community college professor for 35 years, as well as a teacher at East Windsor high school in Connecticut. He taught Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology, Native American Studies, and United States History at both the high school and college level.

He is the winner of the Harvard University Award for Innovations in Teaching History, a finalist for the Connecticut Teacher of the Year award, and winner of the UCONN Award for Academic Excellence in the Teaching of Sociology.

In retirement, Soutra has taken his experiences and stories and written a memoir called The Crows of Bennett Road, filled with warm anecdotes, hard-won wisdom, and steadfast faith in the potential of education. He highlights the joys and challenges of teaching and the transformation of public education over the last half century.

His stories are written to inspire and resonate with his readers. Whether you're a teacher yourself, a student who still recalls "that one great teacher," or just simply a person who cares about public schools and education.

In retirement, beside writing, Soutra enjoys volunteering his time at High Hopes Therapeutic Riding in Old Lyme, CT, continuing to inspire and empower individuals. Marc also enjoys time out on his boat and spending time with his family.

This is only the beginning of a new chapter in Soutra's life, one where he continues to inspire, empower, spread his experiences in public education, and share his deeply rooted passion for teaching.
